Webphilosophical complexities of inquiry is fundamental to embracing and advancing progressive forms of pedagogy. This essay is an attempt to illuminate a significantaspect of Dewey’s philosophy that is largely absent from contemporary educational dis-courses on inquiry, which is the relationship between the self and the process of inquiry. WebDewey's theory of inquiry rejected earlier empiricist and rationalist models in favor of understanding the achievement of knowledge from a naturalistic and developmental perspective. For Dewey, inquiry must be understood genetically, as a developing activity, the features of which play certain functional roles in this developmental process.
